Greece
Flat-bottomed islands barely above the waterline with sand so white it glows at dusk.
The island barely rises from the water — a flat-bottomed speck of Cycladic rock surrounded by sand so white it glows in the dusk light. Fishing caïques work the harbour in the morning, and by afternoon the only movement is the slow drift of swimmers between sea-carved rock pools on the eastern shore.
Koufonisia consists of two islands — Ano (upper) and Kato (lower) — separated by a channel crossed by small boat taxi. Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited island, has a permanent population of around 400 and sits barely above sea level — the highest point reaches roughly 100 metres. The eastern shore has sea-carved rock tunnels, natural arches, and pools accessible only on foot, while the beaches at Pori and Italida require a walk along the coast path. Kato Koufonisi, largely undeveloped, has two beaches and no permanent structures beyond a seasonal taverna.
Couple
Walking the coastal path to the rock pools at sunset, lobster pasta at the harbour tavernas, and the sound of nothing but sea on a flat-bottomed island.
Friends
Swimming and cliff-jumping at the rock tunnels, boat taxi to the wild beaches of Kato Koufonisi, and cold beers on the harbour wall at dusk.
Family
The beaches are shallow and sheltered, the island is flat enough for small children to walk, and the atmosphere is safe and village-scaled.
Lobster pasta at the handful of tavernas that line the sandy harbour — fresh, simple, unforgettable.
Grilled fish chosen from the morning catch, served whole with nothing but lemon and olive oil.
