Greece
A smuggler's ship rusts inside a cliff-ringed cove while loggerhead turtles nest on the southern sand.
The ship's hull rusts in the centre of the cove, orange against white sand, ringed by limestone cliffs that rise vertically from turquoise water. From above, the beach is a crescent of impossible colour — no road reaches it, and the only approach is by boat through the open channel.
Navagio Beach — the Shipwreck — contains the remains of the Panagiotis, a freighter that ran aground in 1980 while allegedly smuggling contraband cigarettes. The beach is accessible only by boat, and the viewing platform on the cliff above has become one of the most photographed spots in Greece. On the southern coast, Zakynthos hosts the largest nesting colony of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean, protected within the National Marine Park. Glass-bottomed boats allow observation of the turtles in their feeding grounds, and monitored nesting beaches restrict access during the laying season from June to October.
