Italy
Every house a different colour on a lagoon island where lacemakers still work by windows.
The vaporetto pulls alongside the quay and colour hits you — every house a different shade, lemon next to cerulean next to coral, the reflections doubling it all in the canal below. Burano smells of salt water and fried fish. Lace curtains hang in windows where natural light is the only tool that matters.
Burano is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon in Italy, roughly 40 minutes by water bus from Venice proper. Its tradition of lace-making dates to the 16th century, when Burano punto in aria lace was among the most sought-after in Europe — the Museo del Merletto documents this craft with pieces spanning four centuries. The vivid house colours are not decorative whimsy; they originated so fishermen could identify their homes through the lagoon fog. The island's resident population has dwindled to around 2,500, giving it a quieter character than its famous neighbour. Burano is also known for risotto de gò, made from goby fish found only in these waters.
Couple
The colours make every corner a photograph, and the island's small size means you can wander without a plan — lunch at a canal-side table, then a gelato walk with no destination in mind.
Family
Children respond to Burano instinctively — the colours, the boats, the cats on doorsteps. It is small enough that nobody gets lost, and the gelato-to-church ratio is firmly in their favour.
Friends
A group lunch at a lagoon-side table, a wander through the backstreets comparing house colours, and a vaporetto ride back to Venice with salt on your skin and camera rolls full.
