Scotland
A community-owned island where a volcanic ridge towers over singing sands that squeak underfoot.
The community bought this island in 1997 and built Europe's first grid powered entirely by renewable energy — wind, water, and solar keeping the lights on while the mainland debates the theory. Eigg rises from the sea with a volcanic pitchstone ridge like a dinosaur spine and beaches where the sand sings underfoot.
Eigg is a community-owned island in the Small Isles, its 100 residents managing the land, the power grid, and the island's future through a community trust. The Singing Sands on Laig Bay emit an audible squeak when walked on — the quartz grains vibrate at a frequency that makes the beach hum. An Sgùrr, a pitchstone lava ridge, rises 393 metres from the island's centre, its summit giving views to Rum, Skye, and the Scottish mainland. The island shop, café, and craft studios are all community-run, and the renewable energy grid — combining wind, hydro, and solar — generates enough power for the entire island with a battery backup for calm nights.
Solo
Eigg's scale is perfect for solo exploration — small enough to walk in a day, complex enough to surprise. The singing sands, the ridge, and the community ethos reward curious visitors.

Arriving by CalMac ferry, walking to the singing sands, climbing An Sgùrr, and eating at the community café — Eigg packs a remarkable amount of wonder into a tiny island.
