Over 50 ancient shipwrecks discovered off one tiny island — the Aegean's deepest graveyard.
Over fifty shipwrecks lie in the channels around this tiny island — the greatest concentration of ancient maritime remains in the Aegean, spanning two thousand years of Mediterranean trade. Above the waterline, the catch comes in fresh and goes straight to the quayside tavernas, and the world has not yet noticed.
Since 2015, marine archaeologists have documented more than 50 ancient shipwrecks in the waters around Fourni, making it the most concentrated ancient maritime graveyard in the Aegean. The wrecks span from the Archaic through the Byzantine period, with cargo amphorae, anchors, and hull timbers visible on the seabed. The island's main income remains fishing, and the afternoon catch is often served directly at quayside tavernas the same evening. Fourni Korseon is an archipelago of 13 islands and islets — only three are inhabited, and the rest are undeveloped coastline accessible only by private boat.
