Australia
Wade across a coral cay at low tide, then watch turtles nest under the stars.
At low tide, you walk from the beach onto the reef flat β no boat, no gear, just bare feet on coral rubble. At night, a green turtle heaves herself up the same beach to lay eggs in a nest she dug with her flippers. Heron Island runs on its own tidal schedule.
Heron Island is a true coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, 80 kilometres offshore from Gladstone, Queensland. The island's reef is accessible directly from the beach β at low tide, the reef flat extends hundreds of metres, putting coral gardens, anemones, and reef fish at wading depth. Between November and March, green and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches; between June and October, humpback whales pass close enough to see from the shore. The University of Queensland has maintained a research station on the island since 1951. No day visitors are permitted β every person on the island stays overnight, keeping numbers low and the reef pressure minimal.
Solo
No day trippers, no distractions β just you, the reef, and turtles nesting on a beach you share with researchers and a few dozen guests.
Couple
Walk to the reef from your room, watch turtles nest at night, and wake to the sound of terns β Heron Island distils the reef experience to its essence.
Resort dining where the menu is secondary to the green turtle surfacing beside the jetty at sunset.
Fresh reef fish served with the simplicity the island demands β nothing competes with the setting.
