Australia
Dawn mist lifts to reveal platypuses feeding in a creek that tumbles through cloud forest.
Dawn mist lifts from Broken River and a platypus surfaces — bill sweeping the creek bed, body turning in the current, utterly indifferent to the person standing silently on the viewing platform above. Eungella's cloud forest breathes moisture. Everything drips.
Eungella National Park perches on a range top in Queensland's Pioneer Valley, its cloud forest permanently wrapped in mist at 900 metres elevation. The park is one of Australia's most reliable wild platypus viewing locations — the creatures feed at dawn and dusk in Broken River, visible from purpose-built platforms. Eungella's isolation has produced endemic species found nowhere else, including the Eungella honeyeater (discovered in 1998), the Eungella gastric-brooding frog (possibly extinct, last seen in 1985), and several plant species confined to this single mountaintop. The rainforest here is subtropical, transitioning to open eucalypt woodland at higher elevations.
