Khao Luang Cave in Phetchaburi Province holds one of Thailand's most visually arresting religious interiors, hidden inside a forested hill above a small provincial town.
Tham Khao Luang is a cave temple inside a limestone hill on the outskirts of Phetchaburi town, approximately 160 kilometres south of Bangkok. The main cavern is vast — large enough that the natural skylights in the ceiling create dramatic shafts of illumination that shift across the Buddha statues throughout the morning. Thai monarchs have added statues since the Ayutthaya period; the oldest figures date back several centuries. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) visited in the 19th century and commissioned additional Buddha images. The cave is reached by a short climb through trees from the base of the hill. Phetchaburi itself — famous for its palm sugar desserts and its hilltop palace — is a town that rewards exploration beyond the cave.
