Lady Elliot Island is a 45-hectare coral cay at the Great Barrier Reef's southern extremity, accessible only by light aircraft from Bundaberg or Hervey Bay. The island hosts year-round manta ray populations — individuals have been identified and tracked for decades — along with green and loggerhead turtles that nest on the beach from November to March. The reef flat is accessible by wading straight from the beach, putting snorkelling-depth coral within 50 metres of your cabin. The eco-resort operates entirely off-grid, generating power through solar panels and desalinating its own water. There is no mobile reception, no television, and no Wi-Fi in rooms.
