Indonesia
Tattooed shamans sharpening arrows in rainforest clearings while heavy surf breaks on the outer reef.
The uma longhouse is dark, smoky, and smells of sago and damp earth. Sikerei shamans with full-body tattoos sharpen arrows and chant over medicinal plants. Outside, the jungle hums. On the outer reef, heavy swells peel across shallow coral in the kind of waves that draw surfers from every continent. The Mentawai exist in two realities simultaneously: one of the world's oldest tribal cultures and one of the world's most coveted surf destinations, overlapping on the same chain of islands.
The Mentawai Islands are an archipelago of approximately 70 islands off the west coast of Sumatra, with Siberut as the largest. The indigenous Mentawai people โ recognised by UNESCO as one of the world's most culturally intact tribal societies โ practise elaborate tattoo traditions, animist belief systems, and communal longhouse living. Siberut's interior hosts a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protecting endemic primates (Mentawai macaque, Kloss's gibbon, pig-tailed snub-nosed langur). The islands' outer reefs produce world-class surf: consistent, powerful waves breaking over shallow coral in locations like Lance's Left, Macaronis, and Telescopes. Surf camps and charter boats operate from Padang (12-hour ferry or charter speedboat). Cultural visits to interior Siberut longhouses are arranged through specialist guides from Muara Siberut.
