Scotland
An evacuated island where seabirds inherit the village and 215-metre cliffs guard the Atlantic edge.
The village was evacuated in 1912 β roofless houses now face the Atlantic in a row of open mouths, and the 215-metre sea cliffs on the western side drop vertically into water teeming with seabirds. Mingulay is what happens when people leave and nature accepts the invitation.
Mingulay is an uninhabited island at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides, its last residents leaving in 1912 after centuries of increasing isolation. The abandoned village on the eastern shore preserves stone houses, a schoolroom, and a chapel in various stages of return to the land. The western sea cliffs, among the highest in Britain, support colonies of fulmars, razorbills, puffins, and guillemots in internationally significant numbers. Access is by small boat from Barra β there is no pier, no shelter from swell, and landings depend entirely on sea conditions. The island features in a well-known Scottish folk song, 'Mingulay Boat Song', whose rowing rhythm echoes the journey.
Solo
Walking through the abandoned village alone, with seabirds overhead and the Atlantic behind β Mingulay's combination of human absence and natural abundance is a profound solo experience.
Friends
Chartering a boat from Barra and landing on Mingulay together β the group expedition format suits an island that demands commitment just to reach.
No food, no shelter, no people β only the largest puffin colony in the Outer Hebrides.
Pack everything for the boat trip from Barra. The crossing alone earns every sandwich.
