Scotland
Solitary mountains erupt from a moonscape of lochs and bog like stone cathedrals without congregations.
Suilven rises alone from the Assynt moorland like a stone cathedral without a congregation — a mountain so individually shaped it looks planted rather than formed. The geology here changes every few miles, and some of the rock beneath your feet is among the oldest on the surface of the Earth.
Assynt is a region in northwest Sutherland defined by its singular inselberg mountains — isolated peaks rising from a platform of Lewisian gneiss that is nearly three billion years old. Suilven, Stac Pollaidh, and Quinag are each architecturally distinct, their shapes determined by the differential erosion of Torridonian sandstone. The Inchnadamph bone caves held human remains 4,500 years old alongside the bones of arctic fox, lynx, and brown bear — evidence of a Scotland almost unrecognisable today. Lochinver, the region's main settlement, is home to Lochinver Larder, a pie shop whose reputation draws detours from across the Highlands.
Solo
Assynt's mountains are best approached alone — the isolation above the moor, with no other peak nearby, creates a solitary experience unique in Scotland.
