Oman
Sheer limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise fjords where dolphins race your dhow.
The dhow slices through water so clear the coral is visible twenty metres below. Limestone cliffs tower on both sides, their faces scarred and pockmarked by millennia of wind and tide. A pod of spinner dolphins surfaces ahead, riding the bow wave as if they've been expecting you.
The Musandam Peninsula is Oman's dramatic northern exclave, separated from the rest of the country by the UAE. Often called the Norway of Arabia, its khor system โ deep, fjord-like inlets carved into the Hajar Mountains โ creates one of the most striking coastal landscapes in the Middle East. The peninsula remained virtually inaccessible by road until the 2000s, which preserved both its geology and its fishing culture. Traditional wooden dhows offer overnight cruises through the khors, anchoring in coves where the only sound is water lapping against rock. Snorkelling and diving sites dot the coastline, with visibility regularly exceeding twenty metres and reef sharks patrolling the deeper walls. The telegraph island in Khor ash Shamm marks where the British Empire once ran an undersea cable to India, now a lonely ruin surrounded by turquoise water.
