A waterfall cascading into green pools while camels graze and frankincense trees bleed resin.
The waterfall shouldn't be here. Not in Arabia. But the khareef monsoon disagrees — it sends water cascading over a limestone lip into pools surrounded by green vegetation where camels graze beneath frankincense trees. This is Dhofar's monsoon magic made physical.
Wadi Darbat is a wadi system in the Dhofar Mountains that transforms dramatically during the khareef monsoon season. From June to September, monsoon rainfall creates a genuine waterfall — one of the only seasonal falls in the Arabian Peninsula — cascading into pools surrounded by lush vegetation that would look more at home in East Africa than the Middle East. During the dry season the wadi retains some standing water, but it's the monsoon that reveals its true character. Camels graze freely among the green pools, and frankincense trees grow on the surrounding slopes, their white resin tears visible on the bark. The limestone plateau above the wadi is dotted with sinkholes and caves, and birdlife during the monsoon includes species blown in from the Indian subcontinent and East Africa. The wadi is accessible by road from Taqah and sees both local picnickers and international visitors, particularly during the peak monsoon months.
Family
The green pools, free-roaming camels, and waterfall create a natural playground that delights children — and the access is easy enough for all ages.
Couple
The monsoon transforms the wadi into something almost impossibly green for Arabia — the waterfalls and camel-dotted pools are pure romance.
Friends
The wadi, the plateau sinkholes, and the surrounding frankincense groves offer a full day of varied exploration during khareef season.
