Þórsmörk
A hidden valley of birch forest and braided rivers walled by three colossal glaciers.
Three glaciers loom above the valley rim, and below them a birch forest of twisted trunks and moss-padded floors spreads between braided rivers of glacial silt. Þórsmörk is Thor's Forest — a valley so sheltered that wildflowers bloom here while the surrounding highlands are still locked in snow.
Þórsmörk sits in a triangle of ice: Eyjafjallajökull — whose 2010 eruption grounded Europe's air traffic — Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. The shelter creates a microclimate degrees warmer than the plateau, home to one of Iceland's rare native birch woods. Getting in is half the adventure — the glacial fords, Krossá above all, belong to the modified highland buses and serious 4x4 crews, not rental cars. The valley closes the Laugavegur Trek from Landmannalaugar and opens the Fimmvörðuháls Pass to Skógar, which crosses between two glaciers through lava laid down warm in 2010. Mountain huts anchor the valley floor, and day trails climb from the birches to panoramic ridges.
