The ocean has swallowed half a volcano and turned the rest into a village. Totoya's caldera rim rises in green walls above a lagoon so still it mirrors the clouds, the Pacific surging through a single gap in the rock like a pulse. Inside, thatched bures line the shore and canoes rest on black sand. Outside, the open ocean stretches to the horizon. The threshold between the two is a channel narrow enough to swim across.
Totoya sits in the Moala Group, roughly 200 kilometres south of Suva. The island is the eroded remnant of a volcanic caldera, its horseshoe shape enclosing a lagoon connected to the open sea by a single channel on the western side. Three villages โ Tovu, Dravuwalu, and Keteira โ occupy the inner rim, their daily life shaped by the lagoon's tides and the cargo boat's irregular schedule from Suva. There is no airstrip, no resort, and no mobile coverage. The caldera lagoon supports rich coral growth in sheltered water, while the outer reef drops into deep ocean where pelagic fish patrol. The island's isolation has preserved traditional Fijian social structures: the turaga ni koro (village headman) governs daily affairs, and visitors are expected to present sevusevu (a kava offering) upon arrival. Earth-oven cooking, communal fishing, and tapa cloth production continue as living traditions rather than tourist performances.
