Sweden
A mirrored cube suspended in Arctic pines, invisible against the boreal forest canopy.
Seven rooms hang in the pines above the Lule River, each designed by a different architect, each invisible from the forest floor in its own way. The Mirrorcube reflects the canopy. The Bird's Nest looks like fallen branches. The 7th Room floats on steel pillars with a net floor that lets you lie above the treetops. Breakfast arrives by pulley.
The Treehotel in Harads, sixty kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, opened in 2010 with the idea that accommodation could be architecture. Each of the seven rooms β suspended between five and ten metres above the ground β was designed by a different Scandinavian architect. The Mirrorcube's reflective walls make it vanish against the birch and pine canopy. The UFO resembles a flying saucer wedged in the branches. Access to each room is by ramp, bridge, or electric staircase. The surrounding boreal forest offers hiking, fishing, and northern lights viewing in season. Britta's Pensionat, the village guesthouse, serves foraged tasting menus using ingredients from the forest.
