Thousands of tiny turtle hatchlings scramble toward the Arabian Sea under the dark spring moonlight.
The sand moves. Thousands of tiny flippers break the surface, and the first olive ridley hatchlings scramble toward the Arabian Sea under a dark spring sky. The village watches from the dunes, torches switched off. In Velas, the turtles come first.
Velas is a small village on Maharashtra's Konkan Coast that has become the state's most important olive ridley sea turtle nesting site. Between February and April, female turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs in the sand, and the community-led Kasav Mitra Mandal (Turtle Friends Group) patrols the beach nightly to protect nests from predators and human disturbance. Hatching events draw visitors who gather on the beach at dusk to watch thousands of tiny hatchlings emerge and scramble toward the sea. The Konkan coastline around Velas is undeveloped β laterite cliffs, tidal rock pools, and casuarina groves frame the beach. Village homestays serve Konkan fish curry and sol kadhi β a pink kokum-coconut drink served chilled. The conservation programme is entirely community-run, funded by small visitor fees and homestay income.
