The sand moves — tiny flippers break the surface as olive ridley hatchlings scramble for the Arabian Sea in the early light. The village watches from the dunes, kept back behind the volunteers' lines. In Velas, the turtles come first.
Velas, on Maharashtra's Konkan coast, is the state's most important olive ridley nesting site. Between February and April the females come ashore at night to lay, and the community's own Kasav Mitra Mandal — the Turtle Friends Group — patrols the beach nightly, guarding nests from predators and disturbance. Hatching events draw visitors to the dunes at dusk, and the village has built its hosting around the season: homestays, volunteers and awareness talks from conservationists twenty years into the work.
