New Zealand
A glacial lake ringed by peaks where a lone willow growing from the shallows became iconic.
The willow stands alone in the lake shallows, its branches mirrored so perfectly in the water that the reflection is indistinguishable from the tree. That Wānaka Tree is one of the most photographed trees on the planet, and the lake that frames it extends to the Southern Alps in every direction.
Roy's Peak track gains 1,300 metres over sixteen kilometres, rewarding the climb with a view that spans the entire Southern Lakes district. Wanaka sits on the southern shore of the lake, with the Matukituki Valley providing access to Mount Aspiring National Park. Puzzling World's tilted rooms and optical illusions have operated for over fifty years, and the maze is genuinely difficult to solve. The lake partially freezes in winter — rare for New Zealand — creating ice shelves along the shore. The town's population of roughly ten thousand supports a café density that rivals cities ten times its size.
Solo
Roy's Peak at dawn, before the day walkers arrive. The switchbacks are relentless, but the summit ridge — with the lake curving below — justifies every one.
Couple
The lakefront at sunset with That Wānaka Tree, followed by dinner at one of the town's restaurants. Wanaka's charm is that it does not try — the setting does the work.
Friends
Puzzling World first, Roy's Peak second, pub third. Wanaka provides a natural day sequence that escalates in effort and reward.
