Ambae
Every soul left Ambae twice when the volcano stirred; its crater lake still shifts colour.
Ambae rises 39 kilometres long from black-sand shore to a cloud-held summit near 1,500 metres, gardens climbing the slopes between villages. High above them, hidden most days, three crater lakes sit in the caldera, and the largest changes colour, turquoise one visit, reddish-brown the next.
This island lives with its mountain in a way few places on earth still do. The 2017 to 2018 eruption of Manaro Voui was the largest at Ambae in recent history: ash and acid rain smothered gardens and water sources, a new island rose through Lake Voui, and the government twice ordered the entire population, around 11,000 people, off the island, ships carrying whole villages to Maewo, Santo, Pentecost and Malekula. They came back to a grey island and replanted it. Today the coast is settled and green again, with hiking trails, quiet southern beaches and some of Vanuatu's best birdwatching; the summit lakes sit inside the national volcano-alert regime, and conditions decide whether any route climbs towards them. Base on the coast, buy the morning's produce at Saratamata's market, and let the mountain set the itinerary.
