Kilimanjaro's snow cap floats above the cloud line like something painted onto the sky, and beneath it Amboseli's permanent swamps draw the elephant herds the park is famous for — dark shapes wading chest-deep through the green, water dripping from their tusks. Amboseli holds this composition — Africa's largest land animals against Africa's tallest mountain — with the ease of a place that has always known what it is.
Amboseli sits in Kajiado County at Kilimanjaro's feet, and its trick is hydrological: the mountain's water travels underground and rises here as permanent swamps in an otherwise dusty basin, which is why KWS bills the park as the home of the African elephant. The herds are the most closely watched on Earth — the Amboseli elephant study has run continuously since 1972, with thousands of individuals known by family and name. Between dust and marsh the park swings from cracked lake bed, where flamingoes gather when the water returns, to wetlands loud with some of the 400-plus bird species that make this one of Kenya's Important Bird Areas. Observation Hill surveys the whole basin, the skies go properly dark at night, and the mountain keeps its own schedule — dawn and dusk are its honest hours.
