Mist rolls through bamboo so dense the forest floor vanishes three paces ahead. Waterfalls tumble off moorland heights into ravines choked with giant heather and lichen-draped hagenia. At night the forest clearings and salt licks come alive — elephants, buffalo and sometimes a leopard moving through the dark.
The Aberdares rise past 4,000 metres between the Rift and Mount Kenya, a spine of montane forest, bamboo and open moorland behaving nothing like safari Kenya — cooler, wetter, secretive. The forest hides Kenya's most secretive residents: leopard in numbers, giant forest hog, and the rare mountain bongo clinging on in the thickets. Its waterfalls rank with Kenya's tallest — Karuru steps down its gorge in three great drops, with Chania and Gura pouring close by — and the moorland above feels borrowed from another latitude. This is also where a princess came down from a night at Treetops in 1952 as a queen; the treetop-lodge idea was invented on these slopes and still defines them.
