Mist rolls through bamboo thickets so dense the forest floor vanishes three paces ahead. Waterfalls tumble from moorland heights into ravines choked with giant heather and lichen-draped hagenia trees. At night, the floodlights of a treetop lodge illuminate a salt lick where elephants, buffalo, and the occasional leopard materialise from the darkness without warning.
The Aberdare Range rises to over 4,000 metres in Kenya's Central Highlands, forming a spine of montane forest, bamboo belt, and open moorland between the Rift Valley and Mount Kenya. Aberdare National Park protects this habitat, which supports one of Kenya's densest leopard populations alongside the rare bongo antelope, giant forest hog, and over 250 bird species. The park's waterfalls — Karuru, Chania, and Gura — rank among the tallest in Kenya, with Gura plunging nearly 300 metres in a single drop. The Treetops Lodge, where Princess Elizabeth learned she had become Queen in 1952, established a model of wildlife viewing that defined Kenyan tourism for decades. Altitude and thick forest make the Aberdares cooler and wetter than the lowland reserves — a different Kenya entirely.
