Birka

Birka was the largest Viking trading post in Scandinavia — a lake island where merchants from Baghdad, Byzantium, and the Baltic met to exchange silver, furs, and amber. The settlement thrived from the 750s to around 975 AD, then was abandoned. The island returned to silence, and the archaeology buried itself under grass.
Birka occupies Björkö island in Lake Mälaren, thirty kilometres west of Stockholm. The site was the most important trading centre in the Viking world — archaeological excavations have uncovered over 3,000 graves and artefacts originating from across the medieval trading world, from the Caliphate to the British Isles. The museum on the island reconstructs a Viking-age street — workshops, market stalls, and domestic life. UNESCO listed Birka (alongside Hovgården on the neighbouring island) in 1993. Access is by boat from Stockholm or Mariefred — the crossing passes through the island-studded waters of Lake Mälaren on the same route the Viking traders would have used.
