Cascada de Tamul is a 105-metre waterfall — the tallest in San Luis Potosí state — where the Río Gallinas plunges into the Río Tampaón within the Huasteca Potosina region. The only way to reach the falls is a three-hour kayak or canoe paddle through the Tampaón River canyon from the village of Tanchachín. The canyon walls narrow dramatically as you approach, the sound of the falls building long before the visual reveal. The turquoise colour of the river comes from dissolved limestone, and the water maintains this intensity year-round. During the wet season (June to October), the waterfall swells to its most powerful, and additional cascades appear along the canyon walls. The paddle back takes the same route — there is no overland access. Local guides from Tanchachín provide kayaks, canoes, and navigation, and the journey includes stops at side canyons and swimming holes along the route.
