Volcanic hills said to have inspired Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa still glow emerald after rain.

The hills roll green and smooth against a sky so wide it seems to bend at the edges. After rain, the volcanic soil glows a deep emerald that earns its literary reputation — these are the slopes Hemingway wrote about, and the colour is not exaggerated. To the south-east, Kilimanjaro floats above the cloud line, close enough to feel borrowed from another country.

The Chyulu Hills are a young volcanic range in south-eastern Kenya, stretching roughly 100 kilometres between Amboseli and Tsavo West national parks. Parts of the range are estimated to be less than 500 years old, making them among the youngest volcanic formations in East Africa. Beneath the surface, one of the world's longest lava tubes — Leviathan Cave — extends for over 12 kilometres through the volcanic rock. The Chyulu aquifer feeds Mzima Springs in Tsavo West, where millions of litres of crystal-clear water surface daily after filtering through porous lava. Maasai communities graze cattle on the lower slopes, while the upper hills are protected within Chyulu Hills National Park and the adjacent Ol Donyo conservancy, which offers some of Kenya's most exclusive safari accommodation.

Best For

Solo

Walking the open ridgelines with Maasai guides, Kilimanjaro in view, offers a contemplative alternative to vehicle-based safari — the pace is yours, and the landscape does the rest.

Family

The gentle terrain and open grasslands make the Chyulu Hills a relaxed, walkable safari environment suited to families — less intense than big-cat country, but no less captivating.

Why This Place
  • The Chyulu Hills are among the youngest volcanic formations on Earth — the most recent eruptions occurred 200–500 years ago, leaving black lava fields, cinder cones, and the Leviathan Cave (Africa's longest lava tube at 12.5km).
  • The hills feed Tsavo's Mzima Springs — rainwater percolates through porous volcanic rock and emerges 50 kilometres away as 50 million gallons of crystal-clear fresh water daily.
  • Ernest Hemingway called these the Green Hills of Africa in his 1935 book — the volcanic hills remain one of Kenya's most productive wildlife corridors, linking Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems.
  • Ol Donyo Lodge on the hills offers guided walks, mountain biking, and night game drives in a 140,000-acre private conservancy — with Kilimanjaro visible on clear mornings.
