Wild horses drink from Aegean coves in a national park where pine forest meets the sea.
Pine forest runs straight down to coves where the water turns from green to transparent blue over white pebbles. Wild horses appear between the trees, unhurried, drinking from the streams that empty into the Aegean. Nothing is built between the mountains and the sea.
Dilek Peninsula National Park occupies a mountainous headland south of Kuşadası, protecting nearly 28,000 hectares of woodland, wetland and coast together with the Büyük Menderes Delta. Wild horses, brown bears, jackals and more than 250 bird species live here; the Anatolian leopard survives only in old records. Four public beaches line the south shore, İçmeler, Aydınlık, Kavaklıburun and Karasu, each reached through dense pine and plane forest, with daily entry capped to protect the ecosystem. Across the strait, the Greek island of Samos rises barely two kilometres from the peninsula's tip.

A day spent walking between coves, watching for wild horses and swimming in water this clear, with no resort in sight, is the Aegean at its most honest.
