Scotland
A castle on a tidal island where three sea lochs meet, reflected so perfectly it doubles.
Three sea lochs converge at the foot of Eilean Donan Castle, and the water reflects the stone so perfectly on still days that the castle appears to stand on its own mirror image. A single arched bridge connects the castle to the mainland โ at high tide, the castle is an island.
Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, its position at the confluence of Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh creating a composition that seems engineered for postcards. The castle was reduced to rubble in 1719 when Royal Navy frigates bombarded the Spanish garrison sheltering within its walls. Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap rebuilt it from 1912 to 1932 using the original 13th-century ground plan, an act of romantic restoration that took twenty years. The Banqueting Hall and Billeting Room now display Jacobite artefacts and Clan MacRae history.

The three-loch reflection, the arched bridge, and the castle's restored interior create the most photographed romantic setting in the Highlands. Arrive at dawn to have it to yourselves.
Family
The castle's manageable size, clear historical narrative, and the bridge approach appeal to children who want a 'real castle' experience without the scale of Edinburgh or Stirling.
