Greece
Cliff-edge Chora glowing white against a 200-metre drop into indigo Aegean.
The Chora sits on the edge of nothing β white cubes and blue domes balanced on a cliff that drops two hundred metres straight into the Aegean. The main square has no barrier on its outer side, just a stone parapet and then air. At night the village glows against the dark rock, and the wind carries the sound of the sea from far below.
Folegandros has no airport, no ancient ruins, and no large resort β the island was used as a place of political exile by Roman emperors and later by the Greek military junta, which kept it isolated. The Chora has fewer than 750 permanent residents and effectively closes in winter, when ferries run only twice a week. The Church of Panagia, perched on a rocky outcrop above the village and reached by a zigzag path, offers a view of the entire island and the open sea to the south. The beaches β Angali, Agios Nikolaos, Karavostasis β are accessible by footpath or small boat and remain uncrowded even in August.
