Gaua
A volcanic lake drains into the ocean via a waterfall that plunges through untouched jungle.
The trail climbs through jungle so thick you lose the sky, and for hours the only markers are machete cuts on tree trunks and the distant sound of falling water. Then the forest opens onto Lake Letas — Melanesia's largest crater lake — dark, still, and ringed by the caldera walls of an active volcano. Somewhere below the rim, that water finds its way to the ocean via Siri Falls, plunging 120 metres through jungle to the sea.
Gaua is one of the Banks Islands in northern Vanuatu, dominated by Mount Garet and the vast caldera that holds Lake Letas. The lake drains through a river that drops off the island's coastal cliffs as Siri Falls, visible from the ocean but reachable only by a four to six hour jungle trek from the coastal villages. The island receives almost no visitors — community guides lead groups of one or two and know every section of trail by memory. Gaua is also one of the few places in Vanuatu where water music is still practised — women standing in the ocean slap and cup the surface to create rhythmic percussion, a tradition found nowhere else in the country. Village accommodation is basic eco-stays, and meals come from earth ovens and the reef.
Solo
The trek to Lake Letas with a single guide through jungle that swallows the path behind you is the definition of earned remoteness. Gaua rewards the kind of traveller who measures a place by how far it is from everything else.
