Sweden
A mountain station on the Norwegian border where arctic flowers bloom above the treeline.
Grövelsjön mountain station sits at the Norwegian border, beside a lake so clear the bottom is visible at three metres — glacier meltwater that has no colour except the light that passes through it. Trails radiate from the station in every direction: short loops for families, full-day crossings into Norway, and winter ski routes across the frozen lake where the silence is total.
Grövelsjön is a mountain station and village in northern Dalarna, at the western end of the road from Idre. The STF mountain station, operating since the 1930s, provides meals, accommodation, and sauna at the base of trails that cross into Norway within an hour's walk. The lake — Grövelsjön — is fed by glacier meltwater from the surrounding peaks, giving it exceptional clarity. Family-friendly marked trails range from two-hour loops through birch forest to full-day mountain crossings. Winter brings groomed cross-country ski trails across the frozen lake and into the surrounding mountains.
Solo
The mountain station provides the base; the trails into Norway provide the purpose. Solo walkers can cross borders on foot and return for a sauna and a meal — the rhythm is self-sufficient.
Couple
The mountain station, the clear lake, and the trails into Norway create a shared mountain experience with the comfort of cooked meals and a warm bed at the end of each day.
Friends
Multi-day hiking with hut-based accommodation, winter skiing across the frozen lake — Grövelsjön gives groups altitude and activity without sacrificing comfort.
Family
The marked family trails, the mountain station facilities, and the lake swimming in summer make Grövelsjön one of the most accessible mountain destinations for children in Sweden.
