Kenya
Cycle past zebras through a volcanic gorge where geothermal steam hisses from the earth.
Pedal strokes echo off volcanic cliff faces as zebras scatter from the track ahead. Steam hisses from cracks in the gorge floor, and Fischer's Tower — a lone volcanic plug — stands against the sky like a broken fang. Hell's Gate in Kenya's Rift Valley is the rare national park where you explore on foot and by bicycle, not from behind a windscreen.
Hell's Gate National Park covers 68 square kilometres of volcanic terrain near Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley. The park is one of only two in Kenya where visitors can walk or cycle freely among wildlife, including buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and occasionally leopards. The geothermal activity beneath the surface powers the Olkaria Geothermal Station, one of Africa's largest, while inside the park, hot springs and steam vents punctuate the landscape. The Hell's Gate Gorge itself narrows to a slot canyon with walls carved by ancient water flows — a descent that requires scrambling through warm, mineral-stained rock. The park's dramatic scenery reportedly inspired the landscapes in Disney's The Lion King.
Solo
Cycling solo through the gorge with wildlife grazing on either side is one of Kenya's most exhilarating half-day experiences — no guide required, just a hired bike at the gate.
Couple
An active, affordable date with dramatic scenery. Cycle the main track together, then descend into the gorge for the scramble through geothermal steam vents.
Family
Children old enough to cycle love the freedom of riding among wildlife. The gorge descent is manageable for adventurous families with older kids.
Friends
Rock climbing on Fischer's Tower, cycling through wildlife, and gorge scrambling in a single day — Hell's Gate packs more adrenaline into one park than most safari circuits manage in a week.
