Australia
Australia's largest island national park — the Thorsborne Trail through mangroves, reefs, and uninhabited jungle.
The permit allows 40 walkers on the trail at any time. You may see three of them in four days. The Thorsborne Trail runs 32 kilometres through mangrove creeks, granite ridges, and rainforest that has never been logged, on an island that has never been developed. The signage about estuarine crocodiles is not advisory.
Hinchinbrook Island off the north Queensland coast is Australia's largest island national park — 39,350 hectares of mountain rainforest, mangrove systems, and coral-fringed coastline with no roads, no shops, and no permanent structures beyond composting toilets. The Thorsborne Trail (East Coast Trail) traverses 32 kilometres from Ramsay Bay to George Point, crossing mangrove creeks, granite headlands, and sections of beach where estuarine crocodiles are present. Permits limit trail users to 40 at any time, guaranteeing a solitude that is enforced rather than hoped for. The island's western side faces the mainland across a narrow channel of mangrove-lined water; the eastern coast meets the Coral Sea.
Solo
Forty walkers permitted, four days of trail, and crocodile-patrolled creeks — Hinchinbrook is solo wilderness walking at its most serious and most rewarding.
Friends
A multi-day trail in genuine wilderness where the group carries everything — Hinchinbrook bonds friends through shared self-reliance and shared awe.
Whatever you packed in — the island has no shops, no restaurants, and no people beyond fellow walkers.
