The sound arrives before the sight — a low roar that builds as the boardwalk bends towards the Garganta del Diablo, then detonates into a wall of white water and spray that soaks you to the skin before you've found the railing. Iguazú Falls in Misiones Province straddles the Argentine-Brazilian border across a horseshoe 2.7 kilometres wide, making it wider than Victoria Falls and taller than Niagara. Coatis pad the walkways between the 275 individual cataracts, entirely unbothered by the human spectacle beside them.
The falls were formed around 150 million years ago when volcanic activity fractured the Paraná River plateau, sending the river over a sudden basalt escarpment that remains one of the most dramatic geological features in the Americas. UNESCO declared both the Argentine and Brazilian sides World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1986 respectively. The Argentine side provides the most intimate encounter: elevated metal walkways bring visitors within metres of individual falls, and a jet boat carries passengers directly beneath the lowest cataracts for a full-body soaking. The surrounding Atlantic Forest harbours toucans, tapirs, giant anteaters, and over 400 bird species. The Guaraní people, who have inhabited the region for centuries, named the site 'big water' — the most accurate understatement on a continent of extremes.
