Haenyeo grandmothers diving without oxygen into volcanic shallows to harvest sea urchins by hand.
She surfaces with a whistle. The haenyeo diver is 70 years old, she has been holding her breath for three minutes, and the net bag attached to her waist is full of sea urchins she harvested by hand from volcanic rock 10 metres below.
Jeju's identity is defined by its haenyeo — women divers who harvest seafood without breathing equipment, a practice designated as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The tradition is generational but endangered: most active haenyeo are over 60, and the youngest recruits are in their 40s. The island's volcanic geology has created over 360 parasitic cones (oreum) scattered across the landscape, each one a miniature volcanic hill visible from roads and trails. Jeju dialect is so distinct from standard Korean that linguists classify it as a separate language — younger islanders increasingly struggle to understand their grandparents. Dol hareubang stone grandfather statues, carved from volcanic basalt, are found nowhere else in the world. Black pork — raised on the island's volcanic grasslands — is grilled thick over stone until the fat renders completely, producing a flavour profile distinct from mainland pork.
