Checkerboard salt pans stretching to the horizon, reflecting clouds over an island of mudflats.
The salt pans stretch to the horizon in a perfect grid — shallow pools reflecting clouds, separated by narrow earthen walls walked by workers in rubber boots. The entire island smells of brine and sun-baked mud.
Jeungdo is Korea's second officially designated 'Slow City' island, with solar salt production as the primary livelihood. The checkerboard salt pans date to the early 20th century and remain in active production — workers rake crystallised salt from shallow evaporation pools using techniques unchanged in decades. Salt mud baths along the tidal flats have developed a therapeutic tourism niche. The island's population has dropped below 2,000 from a peak of 12,000, reflecting the broader decline of traditional salt farming as an economic model. The visual effect is striking: from elevated viewpoints, the grid of salt pans reflects sky and cloud in a geometric pattern that extends to the coast. Access is by bridge from the mainland, making Jeungdo more easily reachable than most Korean islands.
