The Joshua trees twist upward from cracked earth, their shaggy arms contorting toward a sky so clear at night that the Milky Way arcs overhead like a second horizon. Monzogranite boulders the size of houses sit stacked in improbable piles, warm to the touch after a day of absorbing desert sun. The silence is broken only by the occasional clatter of a rock wren.
Joshua Tree National Park sits at the convergence of two distinct deserts — the higher, cooler Mojave to the west and the lower Colorado to the east — each with its own ecosystem meeting along a visible boundary line. The Joshua trees themselves, a species of yucca that can live over 500 years, grow only in the Mojave section. Over 8,000 documented rock-climbing routes across 450 formations have made the park one of the world's premier bouldering and trad climbing destinations. Between February and April, desert wildflowers and Joshua tree blossoms appear simultaneously across the Mojave section. On new-moon nights, mid-park campsites sit in a sweet spot between the light domes of Los Angeles and Palm Springs, producing some of the clearest night skies within two hours of a major city.

The desert demands nothing but your attention. Camping alone at a site surrounded by boulders, cooking over a fire ring, and watching the Milky Way appear is one of the most accessible wilderness experiences in Southern California.
