Cold sand shifts beneath your boots. Dunes ripple in clean lines toward the horizon, but the horizon is wrong — a wall of snow-capped granite peaks rising 5,000 metres above the desert floor. Katpana is a landscape that breaks the rules of geography. Sand and glaciers do not belong together, yet here they share a valley at 2,500 metres.
Katpana Desert, also called the Cold Desert, sits on the outskirts of Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan at an elevation of approximately 2,226 metres. It is one of the highest deserts in the world, and its dunes are flanked by the snow-covered peaks of the Karakoram range — a visual paradox that makes it unique among Pakistan's landscapes. The sand is glacial in origin, deposited by the Indus River and its tributaries over millennia. A small lake, Katpana Lake, sits among the dunes and occasionally freezes in winter, adding another layer of contradiction. The desert is compact — walkable in an hour or two — but the experience of standing on warm sand while staring at 7,000-metre ice-capped summits is disorienting in the best way. Skardu town is a short drive away, making Katpana accessible as a half-day excursion.
