Kenya
Dolphins escort your dhow to coral gardens where humpback whales breach in the channel beyond.
Dolphins race the bow of your dhow as it cuts through the channel, and beneath the hull, the seafloor drops away to coral gardens pulsing with parrotfish and angelfish. The water off Kenya's south coast is warm, clear, and alive. Between August and October, humpback whales breach in the deep channel beyond the reef — the spray visible from the boat before the sound reaches you.
Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park is Kenya's most celebrated marine protected area, covering 28 square kilometres of coral reef, seagrass beds, and small uninhabited islands off the south coast near Shimoni. The park protects over 250 species of fish and some of the healthiest hard coral formations remaining on the Kenyan coast. Indo-Pacific bottlenose and humpback dolphins are resident year-round, and encounters during the dhow crossing are near-guaranteed. The Mpunguti Marine Reserve acts as a buffer zone where local fishermen maintain traditional fishing rights under sustainable management agreements. Snorkelling and diving conditions are consistently clear, with visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres.
Couple
A dhow trip to Kisite is one of Kenya's most romantic day excursions — dolphins on the crossing, snorkelling on pristine reef, and a seafood lunch on Wasini Island afterwards.
Family
Shallow reef sections offer safe snorkelling for children, and the near-certain dolphin sightings make the boat ride alone worth the trip. Humpback whale season adds awe.
Friends
Serious divers and casual snorkellers both find what they need here. The combination of dolphins, coral, and the possibility of humpback whales makes every trip feel like an event.
Wasini Island's beach restaurants serve crab pilau after the dive.
