The dhow cuts a channel where bottlenose dolphins are resident year-round — fins sometimes rising alongside, sometimes nowhere at all — and beneath the hull the seafloor drops to coral gardens pulsing with parrotfish. The water off Kenya's far south coast is warm, clear and alive, and migrating humpback whales pass through the deep channel in their season.
Kisite-Mpunguti is Kenya's most celebrated marine park — coral gardens, seagrass beds and small uninhabited islands off Shimoni, protecting some of the healthiest hard coral left on this coast and fish in their hundreds of species. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are resident in these channels, often seen from the crossing dhows; migrating humpback whales pass through in their season. The adjoining Mpunguti reserve works as a buffer where local fishermen keep traditional rights under sustainable agreements — conservation with the community inside it, not fenced out. Snorkellers get shallow, bright coral; divers get the drop-offs; and Wasini's crab pilau tradition waits across the channel.
