Sweden
Sweden's only coral reef hides beneath the surface of its westernmost archipelago.
The Koster Islands sit at Sweden's westernmost point, two car-free granite outcrops surrounded by the only marine national park in the country. Beneath the surface, cold-water coral reefs and kelp forests hold a density of marine life that belongs to the Atlantic rather than the Baltic. Above it, the islands run on bicycle power and ferry schedules.
Kosterhavet became Sweden's first marine national park in 2009, protecting 390 square kilometres of sea around the Koster Islands. The park holds Sweden's only coral reef — Lophelia pertusa, a cold-water species found at depth — alongside over 6,000 documented marine species, more than any other site in Sweden. Seal safaris run from the islands, with grey seals hauled out on granite skerries in groups visible from the boats. The islands themselves are connected by a small bridge and served by ferries from Strömstad. No private cars are allowed — visitors explore by bicycle on paths that weave between meadows, rocky shores, and a scattering of farms.
