Sweden
A hundred kilometres of Arctic tundra trail where the sun refuses to set for weeks.
The Kungsleden stretches north to south through Swedish Sápmi, and the northern section between Abisko and Nikkaluokta crosses a hundred kilometres of terrain so vast it reduces even confident hikers to specks against the tundra. Above the treeline, the trail becomes a line of cairns across open plateau. The light in July never dims — you walk in permanent golden twilight until sleep, not darkness, stops you.
The Northern Kungsleden passes through Abisko National Park and skirts the flanks of Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain. Mountain stations operated by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) appear every fifteen to twenty kilometres, offering bunks, cooked meals, and saunas. River crossings are managed by rowing boats left at each bank — you pull yourself across alone. The terrain alternates between Arctic birch forest, bare tundra plateau, and glacial valleys where the rivers run turquoise from suspended rock flour. Snow patches linger into July on north-facing slopes, and wildflowers explode in the brief summer window.
Solo
The Kungsleden is one of the defining solo treks in Europe. Mountain stations remove the need for a tent, and the trail's linear design means every day brings new terrain without retracing steps.
Friends
Sharing the river crossings, splitting the weight, and collapsing into a mountain station sauna together — the Kungsleden bonds groups through shared effort and ridiculous scenery.
Mountain station dinners of elk meatballs and cloudberry jam earned after a full day on the trail.
