Sweden
Sea caves and porpoise pods along a dramatic headland where Skåne plunges into the Kattegat.
Kullaberg pushes into the Kattegat like a fist of granite, its sea caves accessible only by kayak and its clifftop trails walked by harbour porpoises below and peregrine falcons above. The lighthouse at the headland has warned ships since 1561. The water here is colder than the calendar suggests and clearer than you expect.
Kullaberg Nature Reserve occupies the Kullen peninsula in northwest Skåne, where the Kattegat meets the Öresund. The headland's sea caves — including Silvergrottan, which glows blue-green from reflected light — are accessible by kayak from the fishing village of Mölle. Harbour porpoises frequent the waters off the reserve, offering Sweden's best chance of a shore-based sighting. Sport climbing routes on the sea cliffs range from beginner to advanced, bolted into granite that drops to the water. The reserve is also a significant bird migration point, with thousands of raptors passing through each autumn.

The cliff trails and sea caves offer a physical, sensory day that doesn't require company — just a kayak, good shoes, and a willingness to get cold.
