A white baroque castle reflected in Lake Vänern, rising from fossil-studded limestone.
Läckö Castle sits white and Baroque on a promontory of Lake Vänern, the largest lake in the EU, its reflection doubling the turrets in water so still it holds the image for seconds after the wind disturbs it. Behind the castle, Kinnekulle rises — a flat-topped mountain whose exposed geological layers span 500 million years.
Läckö Castle is a seventeenth-century Baroque palace on the shore of Lake Vänern in Västra Götaland. Originally a medieval bishop's residence, it was transformed by Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie in the 1650s into one of Sweden's most ornate castles — 242 rooms across its peak. The castle was stripped bare by the crown in the 1830s, then gradually restored room by room. Summer opera performances in the courtyard use the ramparts as a natural stage. Kinnekulle, the table mountain behind the castle, holds geological exposures from the Cambrian to the Silurian period. Farm shops on the mountain's slopes sell wild garlic pesto, local cheeses, and apple juice.
