The Livingstone Mountains form the highest range in southern Tanzania, reaching 2,960 metres above the eastern shore of Lake Malawi. The escarpment face drops over 1,500 metres directly to Matema Beach — a vertical journey through montane forest, bamboo thicket, miombo woodland, and tropical lakeshore compressed into a single two-day descent. Nyakyusa villages on the lower slopes maintain traditional round-house construction and smallholder banana and coffee farming, with an oral tradition and craft heritage distinct from Tanzania's northern highlands. No commercial operators exist. No entry fees. No formal trail system. Navigation relies entirely on local guides, and camping is under open sky.
