Greece
Monasteries clamped to vertical gorge walls where monks still lower bread by rope.
The monastery is bolted to the cliff face โ stone walls rising from vertical rock, a balcony overlooking a drop that falls to the river far below. Across the gorge, another monastery clings to the opposite wall, its frescoes exposed to the elements inside an open rock shelter. Between them, the trail drops through forest to the water and climbs back up the other side.
The Monastery of Prodromou is built into a vertical cliff face above the Lousios River โ monks still inhabit the monastery, and supplies are delivered by a hand-operated cable system. The Old Philosophou Monastery on the opposite cliff wall was founded in 963 AD; its 17th-century frescoes survive exposed to the elements inside the open rock shelter. The gorge trail drops from Dimitsana at 950 metres to the river floor and connects both monasteries in a three-to-four-hour walk past water mills, a gunpowder factory ruin, and Byzantine chapels. Stemnitsa village above the gorge was a centre of Greek silversmithing โ the craft school founded in 1942 still teaches metalwork using traditional Peloponnesian techniques. The gorge is best hiked in spring when the river is full and the wildflowers are out.
Solo
Descend into the gorge alone, visit the cliff monasteries, and climb out through forest โ the trail is well-marked and the solitude between the walls is complete.
