Lousios Gorge
Monasteries clamped to vertical gorge walls, their balconies hanging over the drop to the Lousios.
The monastery is bolted to the cliff face — stone walls rising from vertical rock, a balcony overlooking a drop that falls to the river far below. Across the gorge, another monastery clings to the opposite wall, its frescoes exposed to the weather.
The signed route links the Open-Air Water Power Museum with Prodromou and the Old and New Philosophou monasteries. Prodromou remains a living monastery built into the cliff, while the Philosophou sites reveal different periods of religious life in the gorge. Dimitsana and Stemnitsa add stone architecture, silversmithing and substantial meals to the walking day without relying on colourful but unverified supply-cable stories.
