Greece
Medieval stone streets sealed inside fortress walls where Knights of St John once marshalled for crusade.
The gate closes behind you and the modern world falls away. Medieval stone lanes run between the towering walls of crusader inns, and the Street of the Knights stretches ahead in unbroken Gothic symmetry. Somewhere beyond the Ottoman quarter a minaret rises above the rooftops, and the smell of jasmine drifts through an archway that has been standing since the fifteenth century.
Rhodes Old Town is enclosed within four kilometres of medieval walls built by the Knights of St John during two centuries of Hospitaller rule. The Street of the Knights remains one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe, with each inn representing a different national chapter of the Order. The Grand Masters' Palace, heavily restored by the Italians in the 1930s, contains Roman mosaic floors transported from Kos. Beyond the Crusader quarter, the Ottoman layers of the town emerge โ a mosque, a hammam, and a labyrinth of residential streets where families have lived continuously for over 2,400 years across Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, and Ottoman periods.
