Over a thousand islands where the Baltic freezes solid enough to drive across in winter.
Over 1,300 islands scatter across the northern Baltic off Luleå, and in winter the sea between them freezes solid — hovercraft tours cross the ice, fishermen drill through it, and the archipelago becomes a white plain stretching to the horizon. In summer, the same channels fill with kayaks and sailing boats navigating islands that have no permanent inhabitants, just birds and rock.
The Luleå Archipelago is the northernmost major archipelago in the Baltic Sea, straddling the boundary between the sheltered inner islands and the exposed outer skerries. Gammelstad Church Town, a UNESCO site, sits at the mainland edge. In winter, the frozen sea supports ice fishing, hovercraft excursions, and snowmobile routes between islands — the ice grows thick enough for vehicle traffic. Summer transforms the archipelago into a kayaking and sailing destination, with guest harbours, saunas, and swimming rocks on the larger islands. The midnight sun is visible here for several weeks in June and July.

Friends
Ice fishing in winter, island-hopping in summer — the group dynamics change with the season but the shared adventure stays constant.
Family
The calm inner islands offer protected swimming in summer, and the ice fishing in winter is simple enough for children to participate — drill, drop, wait, catch.
