Menengai Crater
A caldera twelve kilometres across and thick with steam, named for warriors who perished inside.
Steam curls from fissures in the caldera floor, carrying the faint tang of sulphur up through the still air of Kenya's Rift Valley. The rim drops away into a basin twelve kilometres wide, where geothermal vents hiss from fractured rock and scrubby vegetation clings to the inner walls. To the south, Lake Nakuru shimmers between the valley's serrated escarpments.
Menengai Crater is one of the largest volcanic calderas in Africa, formed roughly 8,000 years ago when a massive eruption collapsed the summit of a shield volcano in Kenya's Rift Valley. The name derives from a 19th-century Maasai battle in which defeated warriors were driven over the rim into the crater below. Today, the Kenya Electricity Generating Company drills geothermal wells on the crater floor, harnessing the same volcanic energy that shaped this landscape. Walking trails descend from the rim through lava flows and steam jets, while the upper rim road offers panoramic views across the Rift to Lake Nakuru and the Mau Escarpment. The crater sits just outside Nakuru, Kenya's fourth-largest city, making it one of the most accessible geological spectacles in the region.
