Menengai Crater
A caldera twelve kilometres across and thick with steam, named for warriors who perished inside.
Steam curls from fissures in the caldera floor, carrying a light sting of sulphur through the still Rift air. The rim drops away into a basin twelve kilometres wide, where geothermal vents hiss from fractured rock and scrub clings to the inner walls. To the south, Lake Nakuru shimmers between serrated escarpments.
Menengai is one of Africa's largest volcanic calderas, born some 8,000 years ago when a shield volcano's summit collapsed into itself just outside what is now Nakuru city. The name carries a darker memory — Maasai tradition ties it to a nineteenth-century battle whose defeated warriors were driven over the rim. Today the crater floor steams on two scales at once: natural fumaroles from the fractured rock, and the wellheads of Kenya's geothermal drive harvesting the same heat. Trails drop from the rim through old lava flows to the steam jets, and the rim road looks clear across the Rift to Nakuru's lake and the Mau. Few geological spectacles anywhere sit twenty minutes from a city of this size.
