Munroe Island

A sinking backwater island navigated by silent dugout canoes through arched and claustrophobic mangrove tunnels.

The canoe pushes into a tunnel of mangroves. Branches arch overhead until the canopy closes completely and the daylight turns green. The water is black and still. Munroe Island is sinking — the sea is claiming it centimetre by centimetre — and the narrow canals that were once footpaths now require a boat.

Munroe Island is a cluster of eight small islets in Kerala's Kollam district, formed at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River. Rising sea levels and land subsidence have caused the island to sink gradually — canals that were walking paths within living memory are now navigable only by dugout canoe. The narrow mangrove channels between the islets form claustrophobic tunnels where the canopy closes overhead and the water turns tea-dark from tannins. Coir-rope makers twist coconut fibre by hand on the narrow embankments — the same technique used for generations. No bridges connect the islets — boats are the sole means of inter-island transport. Village life continues despite the encroaching water, with toddy tappers climbing coconut palms and fishermen casting Chinese-style dip nets from the canal banks.

Best For

Solo

A silent canoe through sinking mangrove tunnels — Munroe Island is one of Kerala's most atmospheric and little-known solo experiences.

Couple

The intimate scale, the canoe rides, and the vanishing quality of the island create a shared experience with genuine emotional weight.

Family

Canoe rides through mangrove tunnels, coir-making demonstrations, and the novelty of an island with no roads engage children directly.

Why This Place
  • The island is slowly sinking below sea level — backwater canals that were once paths are now navigable only by canoe.
  • Dugout canoes push through mangrove tunnels so narrow the branches form a complete canopy overhead.
  • Coir-rope makers twist coconut fibre by hand on the narrow embankments — the same technique for generations.
  • The eight connected islets have no bridges between them — boats are the only way to visit neighbours.
What to Eat

Karimeen pollichathu, pearl spot fish marinated in shallots and grilled inside a banana leaf.

Toddy, freshly tapped palm sap that transforms from sweet morning juice to a sharp, tangy ferment by afternoon.
