Kenya
Lions yawn beneath acacia trees with the Nairobi skyline glittering behind them.
A lioness stretches in the grass, yawning, and beyond her the glass towers of Nairobi's Central Business District catch the morning sun. The juxtaposition never normalises. Giraffes browse acacia against a backdrop of aircraft descending into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and warthogs trot along fence lines that separate savannah from highway.
Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world situated within a capital city, covering 117 square kilometres of savannah, forest, and wetland just seven kilometres from downtown Nairobi. Established in 1946, it was Kenya's first national park and remains home to lions, leopards, hyenas, buffalo, and over 400 bird species. The park's southern boundary is unfenced, allowing seasonal migration of wildebeest and zebra from the Athi-Kapiti plains. The ivory burning site, where President Moi set fire to 12 tonnes of confiscated tusks in 1989, became a turning point in global anti-poaching sentiment. Adjacent to the park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust rehabilitates orphaned elephants, and the Nairobi Safari Walk offers a walking alternative to vehicle-based game drives.
