Japan
A 17-person-church island where hidden Christians prayed in secret for two centuries.
Ojika is so quiet you can hear the fishing nets dry. This remote island off Kyūshū's western coast holds a handful of timber churches built by Hidden Christians who practised their faith in secret for generations. The population has dropped below 2,500, and some of the churches seat more memories than people.
Ojika Island forms part of the UNESCO-listed Hidden Christian Sites of the Nagasaki Region. Nozaki Island, accessible by boat from Ojika, contains the abandoned village of Nokubi and its roofless church, where wild deer now graze among the pews. On Ojika itself, the Gorin Church was relocated from Nozaki in 1985 and restored with its original hand-planed timber interior intact. The island operates a kominka stay programme, converting traditional wooden houses into guesthouses that preserve their original structure — tatami floors, wooden shutters, and ceramic roof tiles.
Solo
The boat to abandoned Nozaki Island, the silence of roofless churches, and evenings in a converted timber house make Ojika one of Japan's most introspective solo journeys.
